When bankerss participate in abuse networks they contaminate the financial systems that are supposed to protect citizens from predators. But here’s what made Patel’s response so damaging to his credibility and the FBI’s reputation; when confronted with this documented evidence when pressed about whether he had launched investigations into any of these individuals. When asked directly about FBI files that contain victim testimony naming specific perpetrators, Patel retreated behind bureaucratic language and procedural deflections. 

His first dodge was claiming that he hadn’t personally reviewed the 3:02 documents. Think about that for a moment: the director of the FBI when asked about the most high profile sex trafficking case in recent American history, claims he hasn’t personally reviewed the core evidence – either he’s lying to avoid accountability, or he’s admitting to shocking negligence in managing one of the most important investigations under his control. When Massie pressed him on whether victims’ statements were credible, Patel’s responsewas even more revealing. He said it wasn’t his assertion that victims weren’t credible but rather the assertion of two different United States attorneys’ offices from three separate administrations that the evidence didn’t rise to probable cause for prosecution. But those prosecutors had their own political considerations, their own relationships with powerful suspects, their own reasons for avoiding cases that could implicate elite networks. More importantly, probable cause for prosecution isn’t the only standard that matters. The FBI has a responsibility to investigate credible allegations even when prosecution might be difficult.
