From Arbeit Macht Frei to Reich Macht Frei

washington121117Last week’s article was originally titled “Arbeit Macht Frei” (Work makes you free). It was derivative of one of many evil and ironic Nazi slogans the Jews would have been very familiar with before and during World War II (1933-45). If the Nazis were anything, they were masters of Groupthink and human nature and skilled in the various ways to manipulate human psychology and control of human behavior.

For example, rather than just killing all the Jews under Nazi control with bullets or bombs, the Nazis chose more “humane” and “scientific” methods to murder them, including using mobile units (vans and trucks) that dispensed carbon dioxide gas in a closed space. However, since those methods didn’t produce the body count the Nazis desired, under Adolf Eichmann’s “Final Solution” plan, concentration camps were built throughout Germany and parts of Europe under Nazi control designed to kill millions of Jews and other Untermensch (sub-humans) with the precision and efficiency of a car factory assembly line.

If that weren’t ghastly enough, imagine millions of otherwise cosmopolitan, highly educated people willingly going to these concentration camps. This would not be possible unless the German people had first been indoctrinated for decades in Realpolitick. Beginning under Germany’s first chancellor, Otto von Bismarck (1862-90), all German citizens were taught to accept unquestioned fidelity to government power – even above their own religious and moral teachings. Therefore, 70 years later it wasn’t only the slogan Arbeit Macht Frei that compelled the Jews to enter by the millions into over 1,200 concentration camps and sub-camps where a certain tortuous death awaited them, but an unspoken, unwritten variation of that benign, diabolical slogan I call, Reich Macht Frei – Government makes you free.

Only a nation stripped of their collective and substantive belief in God and deprived of meaningful religious devotion above the State could so willingly, voluntarily and in such incalculable numbers come to the train stations and be compelled to purchase a one-way ticket for yourself and your family into a hellish place that would virtually ensure certain death, yet cling to a stubborn fool’s hope: their abiding faith in government; the Germanic love of bureaucratic efficiency and faith in the omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent State.

Reich Macht Frei.
